IoT Security Risks in Smart Homes in the Philippines

โ€œEvery smart device you own is also a device someone else might try to control.โ€

The rise of smart home technology in the Philippines has introduced convenienceโ€”but also new cybersecurity risks. Internet of Things (IoT) devices such as smart TVs, CCTV cameras, routers, smart lights, and voice assistants are now common in many households.

The problem is that many of these devices are not built with strong security in mind. Weak default passwords, outdated firmware, and poor network configurations make them easy targets for attackers.

Once compromised, IoT devices can be used for:

  • Surveillance through hacked cameras
  • Data collection from home networks
  • Participation in botnet attacks
  • Unauthorized access to other devices

One of the most alarming risks is camera hijacking, where attackers gain access to home security systems, violating personal privacy.

In the Philippines, where many users prioritize affordability over cybersecurity features, IoT risks are often overlooked.

To improve safety, users should:

  • Change default passwords immediately
  • Update device firmware regularly
  • Separate IoT devices from main networks
  • Use secure Wi-Fi encryption (WPA2/WPA3)
