โFree Wi-Fi is convenientโbut it can come at the cost of your privacy.โ
Public Wi-Fi networks are widely available across the Philippines in malls, cafรฉs, transportation hubs, and restaurants. While these networks provide convenience, they also introduce significant cybersecurity risks for users.
One of the most common threats is data interception. On unsecured networks, attackers can capture sensitive information such as login credentials, emails, and browsing activity. This is especially dangerous when users access banking apps or enter passwords without encryption protection.
Another risk is the presence of fake Wi-Fi hotspots, also known as โevil twinโ networks. Cybercriminals create networks with names similar to legitimate ones, tricking users into connecting. Once connected, attackers can monitor all online activity.
Man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks are also common on public networks. In these attacks, hackers secretly position themselves between the user and the internet, allowing them to steal or modify data without detection.
In the Philippines, where mobile internet usage is extremely high, many users rely on public Wi-Fi for convenience without realizing the risks involved.
To stay safe, users should avoid accessing sensitive accounts on public networks, use virtual private networks (VPNs), and ensure websites use HTTPS encryption. Disabling automatic Wi-Fi connections can also help prevent accidental exposure.
Organizations that offer public Wi-Fi should also implement proper security measures such as network segmentation, user authentication portals, and traffic monitoring systems.
โConvenience should never outweigh cybersecurity awareness.โ
