โYour SIM card is no longer just a numberโit is the key to your entire digital life.โ
SIM swapping is a growing form of cybercrime in the Philippines where attackers take control of a victimโs mobile number by convincing or tricking telecom providers into transferring the number to a new SIM card. Once successful, attackers can intercept OTPs, reset passwords, and gain access to banking and social media accounts.
This type of attack is especially dangerous because many Filipinos rely heavily on mobile numbers for authentication in services such as banking apps, e-wallets, and email accounts.
Attackers typically gather personal information through phishing, social engineering, or data leaks before attempting the SIM swap. With enough information, they impersonate the victim and request a SIM replacement.
Once the number is hijacked, victims may suddenly lose signal on their phonesโa major warning sign that their SIM has been compromised.
Preventive measures include setting up SIM PINs, using stronger authentication methods beyond SMS OTPs, and immediately reporting lost signal to telecom providers.
โWhen your phone loses signal unexpectedly, your identity might already be under attack.โ
